Charles recently moved to Echo City when his parents bought a historic building there. When he finds a large troll living in a prison (and steals his Battlebeanz), Charles takes the advice of his new building friend, Kevin, and enlists the help of Margot Malu, a monster broker. It turns out that Echo City has a thriving community of monsters living in the shadows, underground, and in all sorts of unknown places. Margot, a bright and wild child, helps Charles with his troll problem and takes him under her wing as he promises to always protect adult monsters' secrets and help him solve human monsters' problems. In this third book, Margot is engrossed in her own project, so Charles is left alone. He and Kevin see a teenager online trying to cause trouble by exposing the monster's secret lair, and Charles finds a giant family of spiders on the brink of extinction as a result of a massive human extermination project. What could Carlo do alone? And how could he send a message to Margot?
