It's Monday 5/2! What Are You Reading?

Prepared by Book Day

Welcome to the month of May. (May, right?) The weather here is colder than usual, but we spent a good few days together. This is the conclusion of a two week break.

Our favorite campsite on the Deer River

It was our first time since that season, we didn't get to go very far (or much) because of my elderly mother-in-law, but it was nice to take a short break when our son visited his grandpa. . We went to Deer Neck State Park in Maryland and stayed at our favorite camp. Did you see that beautiful water view? We love being in the water, very relaxing, peaceful. Then there's the short walk to this little beach, which has been our favorite spot for decades. Our children love to swim and play in the sand from an early age.

My husband at the beach

My children and I played together in 1999.

The second day was a bit chilly, very windy, but the camp helped keep things comfortable, very long to read.

Cozy fire next to my book.

We'll be home on Tuesday afternoon... and then we'll be back on Friday. I signed another book on Browseabout Books , at an amazing free bookstore near Rehoboth Beach, DE. We love shops, we love cities, so we enjoyed this little getaway on Saturday after the book was signed. We enjoyed a delicious dinner with our son, his girlfriend and we relaxed. On Sunday we returned to my mother-in-law.

And I will go again on Thursday. After more than two years of travel, these four weeks have been a little more impressive in all four directions. The following weekend was Bukitopia, Manchester, VT's annual bookstore (click event) at the famous Northshire Bookstore . My mom and I often go out together, even though it's actually been cancelled for the past two years. All regulars (library!) Nice to be there again this week to meet again... but newcomers are always welcome. It's a quiet day for writers and readers to walk around and talk about books. Entries are still available and you can read my Booktopia 2019 review to see what it looks like. The town is beautiful, with lots of lovely pubs and restaurants.

For obvious reasons, I have a short video last week, a recap of the Friday lectures I used to read, but this includes a few short videos for our vacation camp trip.

This is what we have all been reading for the last two weeks.

My focus is entirely on Booktopia books. Booksellers North has selected eight books (all recent editions) available at this weekend's event, and are trying to read them as soon as possible. After graduating from David Wright Floyd's Black Cloud Rising (which was excellent), I turned to Brendan Sloke's violin plot . Wow, this novel is amazing. By far my favorite book (related to country of origin ). He started the crime of stealing $10 million from the infamous Black Violent Ray. But this novel is more than a mystery. The story goes back to the time when Ray played on a rented instrument without the support of his family, classmates, or music teacher, and started playing the classical music of a poor boy. It is also a historical novel that explores Ray's family history, slavery era, family drama, puzzles, and more. You can listen to some videos of my Friday meeting or read my comments . I can't wait to meet the author this weekend.

I'm currently reading another selection from Booktopia, Ladies by Jane Peck. This is an enigmatic character with a great character and a great sense of humor. Claudia didn't even tell her family about her new job because she was the "sheep" of her "minority" Chinese family. This works for companies that can hire people to find their "match" on one of the many dating apps. A woman approaches them, Claudia checks on two people, but the client dies suddenly. Claudia loves crime novels, begins to study mysterious deaths, or sends her boss away. Claudia is an amazing hero, the writer has an amazing voice. I often laugh out loud while reading.

With that voice, I finally heard Ket Quinn, my first novel, with the newly released Diamond eye of history . During World War II, a Russian woman became one of the deadliest shooters in the world. At the beginning of the book, Milan is a single mother working on her first degree in history, working in the library and raising her young child. Her shooting skills caught the attention of Russian soldiers, who soon found herself in combat and quickly became known as "Lady Dat." ADVERTISEMENT. In 1942, President Roosevelt visited the White House with Russian troops to persuade them to go to war and create a Western front against the Nazis. Later, during a subsequent visit to the United States, Milan befriended Eleanor Roosevelt. This is an excellent novel with interesting historical details but a close look at this woman who is the "murderer" and mother. Definitely recommended

My husband Ken finished with Michel McNamara's "I Will Walk in the Dark". A careful search for a woman in the Golden State killer . Neither of us have read much non-fiction, it's very rare that truth is a crime, but I got this book as a gift from my boyfriend and I loved it. This shocking and tragic story is about a series of rapes in California and the fact that she has been dealing with the police for decades and mostly on foot. The writer, McMamara, learns about some of the issues and begins to investigate himself, eventually helping the police connect state affairs to his untimely death. Her husband, actor Paton Oswald, and researchers completed the book. It's a fun read, Ken and I talked about it over the weekend.

Now Ken has launched a new book, The Land of God, in Lauren Box, in his Easter basket. I chose this for her because we both love Shining Girls by one writer, and we're looking forward to the new TV adaptation coming out on Apple TV this weekend… Elizabeth Moss is looking forward to it. But Beckles' new novel is a post-apocalyptic tale in a world where countless people have died. Miles is one of the few remaining children. Stephen King has been described as a "smartly written" thriller; So it must be good.

Our son still enjoys Terry Goodkind's sword of truth . He finished reading Book 5 Fire Souls and immediately went to Book 6. Remember, these books are between 500 and 1,000 pages each. You work hard, but your job involves shifting times when you can read. He loves this series.
